Although the war ended 16 years ago, Bosnia and Herzegovina records a constant increase in the number of people with post-traumatic stress disorder, better known by the acronym PTSD.

Only in the Sarajevo area in the postwar period to 2008. year there were 3078 hospitalizations of people with PTSD as a primary disease or comorbidities - along with another disease. For example, 1998 at hospital treatment is received 70 and in 2006, 509 patients suffering from PTSD.

According to a report prepared by the Cantonal Ministry of Health, this disorder is most pronounced at the former members of military formations, and in Sarajevo for the last three years is registered 1046 former soldiers suffering from PTSD, which require continuous ambulatory specialized consulting control. In the official report of the cantonal authorities who treat this problem states that the in the mentioned number is considerably larger share of men than women, average age 50 years, that 75 percent of people is married, and that 71 percent of the total number has secondary education, and 21.9 percent are employed.

 

The majority of registered former soldiers suffering from PTSD were exposed to multiple trauma, especialy, with active participation in the fight (78.7 percent), prolonged shelling and sniper fire (74.4 percent), and the loss or death of an close family member or beloved person (45 , 2 percent).

 

In addition to general symptoms, representation of the following symptoms is unchanged : repetitive distressing and painful memories, avoidance of thoughts and feelings related to the traumatic event and difficulty sleeping. In the case of PTSD the most recent research has shown that more than 50 percent of the general population during their life, experience at least one unusually traumatic ballast, and 25 percent of those who survive extreme trauma later develop PTSD.

 

It is estimated that BiH has a 1,750,000 population with a stress-related mental disorder, of which one million of them in the FBiH. The estimates also show that one in five former soldiers have symptoms of PTSD.
