Common rules on mine precautions

  • Do not venture into areas which are known to be covered with mines or are suspected to be infested with mines!
  • Do not work near mine infested areas!
  • Do not touch any UXO or mines you come across!
  • Do not pick up unknown and suspicious objects from the ground!
  • Inform yourself about the area into which you intend to go or on which you are planning to do any work. This information can be acquired at regional offices of BHMAC and municipality civil protection services.
  • Always employ any information you can gain from local population in a given area, and if possible use a local guide who is well informed on mined locations in that area.
  • Stay on safe surfaces, do not touch any unknown objects and do not pull any strings or wires you come across.

In case you come across a mine or UXO

  • Keep your distance and do not touch anything!
  • Do not panic, stay on the safe surface!
  • Remember the location where you saw the mine!
  • Warn any people in the vicinity!
  • Inform the police and civil protection services!

In case you find yourself in the minefield

  • Immediately stop moving!
  • If someone is with you warn him/her to stop moving!
  • Call for help and do not panic!
  • Wait for the help to come; it is better to wait even three days in the middle of a minefield than to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair!
  • Do not expose yourself to any risk and DO NOT attempt any self rescue operations!

Mines are hidden killers. Many minefields are still unmarked.
